Curious Labs Poser

Update: June 20, 2005..This software package is now owned by e-frontier...Do I ever have a love / hate relationship with this software program. :) I love the results, and I hate trying to get there at times. Curious Labs Poser, if you are not familiar with it, is a 3D modeling program mostly evolving around the human life from. At one time it was a product of another company named MetaCreations, which is where I first purchased this product.

My first version was Poser 2, and which with all due respect it was the most difficult program I ever got my hands on. The manual was way ahead of me, and I am assuming many people. Probably because 3D modeling was still in it's infancy in them days. But being an all American guy, I just could not resist them nude women models. I often wonder if the authors of this program kind of knew that too. But after fumbling around with it, I began to get the hang of it eventually. Poser however is a program you need to stay at, and research alot. If you put it away for a month, you will be clueless all over again.

These days however it has created quite a cult following, and many web sites have opened for Poser 3D modeling exclusively. This is great for a guy like me, because I still need all the help I can get.

Let me descibe briefly what you can do with this cool product. First off I will be referring to Poser 4, the one I use now. When it first opens, you will see a model with it's arms spread apart for a beginning reference point. I thought about this, and realized that was a good idea. The reason is that it gives you a visual of every possible pose your model is capable of. What is also cool is that you can setup your default start screen anyway you choose. I personally dont like the default model screen in the center. This is because of me being right handed, I prefer all the dials, and other controls to my right side. So I put my model screen to the far left, and adjust the window to a size I am comfortable with viewing. Yes, you can adjust that option as well. Just make sure you save your setup, or it will default back to the original setup next time you start it.

All in all this is an amazing product, it can pose virtually everything right down to the model's toes. It can give you any skin tone you want, any hair color, and eye color as well. You can change facial expressions, body size, design clothes for them, and even put more than one model on the same palette. Oh, and did I mentions animation? Yup, you can do that too. For under two hundred bucks for the complete package it is a far better deal than almost any other 3D modeling package out there. Try thousands of dollars for some of them. With Curious Labs at the helm now, I think you will seeing many more leaps into a better Poser software package while keeping the price down. Already they have proven to this author they are planning to support this product long into the future. Not to take anything away from the original owners, but they were a bit difficult to get help from. Perhaps because at the time I purchased Poser 4 they were already selling it off. I did have a problem for some time using it until Curious Labs came to the rescue via Daz Productions (the super sexy Victoria model designers) and updated my version. So if you still don't believe this is a great product, wait til you see our completed movie Fireosity :)
