On-Nation HQ Review / June 15, 2004: In this month's review I return to something a bit more positive. Although The Matrix Trilogy, and Trinity's Kick scene have probably been reviewed hundreds of times by now, I still would like to insert my thoughts as well.
First off is the original cast consisting of Keanu Reeves (Neo), Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), and Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) whom all deserve a standing ovation for co-starring in all 3 of the episodes. All 3 of The Matrix episodes were directed by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, music was composed by Don Davis, produced by Joel Silver, and distributed by Warner Brothers .
First there is Neo aka Keanu Reeves. To me no matter how hardcore you try to make him look, he still has that sort of high school innocence about him. Perhaps this comes from his early days as Ted in the Bill and Ted movies. I still have to give him 2 thumbs up for his acting ability though, including his other action movies such as Chain Reaction and Speed.
Next there is Morpheus aka Laurence Fishburne. Now here is a guy I have watched mature into a strong actor. If it be in a supporting role or in the spotlight alone, he has truly come of age in the performers arena. Who would have thought that kid dancing on a PT boat to "Satisfaction" in Apocalypse Now would become such a shining star of the future.
Agent Smith aka Hugo Weaving is next. Well let's face it, after his run in The Lord Of The Rings movies you just knew the producers could not go wrong signing him on. He was most convincing in his Matrix role, all 100 of him, or was it a thousand? No matter how many, I applaud his performance in The Matrix, and as an actor. He was also behind the scenes as the voice of Rex in the Babe fantasy movies.
I have to admit though my favorite character in this trilogy was Trinity aka actress Carrie-Anne Moss, and not the obvious reason that she is a girl and I am a guy. Actually she was my favorite because she was totally convincing in her role, but of course she did look pretty cool in black also. The main thing that intrigued me about her performance was her total focus of the part. She kept that stone cold expression throughout the trilogy as if it was written for her by her. Well not really, I have seen other photos of her, and she has a very nice smile. I bet Vince McMahon over at the World Wrestling Entertainment company would kill to have a girl with that kind of attitude in his ring. Of course her automatic weapons might be a bit of a drawback in the main event though. Her famous Trinity's Kick will never be surpassed, because future filmmakers will just be copying this never forgotten move.
Now on to my review of what I feel actually made The Matrix Trilogy what it is, and that is the special effects. Without this I seriously doubt this movie could have convinced anyone of it's plot. Without the special effects it would be like turning on your PC, and typing text all day instead of firing up the 3D graphics and the killer sound. In other words it just would not be any fun. Before I go any farther though let me mention these talented individuals. Special Effects: First I will announce Steve Courtley as he was involved in all 3 of the series. Other contributors were Jon Thum, Joen Gaeta , Janek Sirrs, Clay Pinney, Danielle Costa, Dan Glass, and John Des Jardin. I really do not know which were the creators of the famous Trinity's Kick, but whomever it was, they paved the way for the success of the trilogy. Everytime I watch these movies again on DVD I am still in awe of how much realism these people put into the effects of these movies. Granted it is a bit farfetched flying around that way, but to make it look so graceful is quite an achievement in a fantasy style movie anytime. But it does not stop there. The dock battle scenes were some of the best I have ever seen, especially in the final of the series using the human controlled robotic exoskeletons. They were awesome and so I declare that The Matrix Trilogy deserves my vote as the best special effects ever. In closing I would just like to say that this was a good team, and you can see that in the final product. As far as I am concerned they can go on and make more Matrix movies in the future. I mean if Stallone can do it 5 times, and if Jason can do it, umm well I lost count of them, then so can the Wachowski brothers. But if the series continues there is one thing I have to demand, and that is they must bring back Trinity again. Kick or no kick, or however the plot can explain away her rebirth, she still gets my vote too :-)........The Editor..........
