On-Nation HQ Review / March 21, 2005: In this month's review I would like to introduce you to an online company named Daz Productions. They are a 3D modeling company who are probably best known for their Victoria creation.
First off I would like to say I have always had good luck with their products, and their staff is always helpful and courteous. Their support team will always reply in a timely manner, and will talk to you on a down to earth level. You wont get some pre-fab / auto reply from these folks.
One of the greatest benefits of doing business with this company is that you are buyiug the product from the direct source. In other words the product you buy, is the product they make. So there is no third party go-between on any issues you may have about your purchase.
As of lately Daz has introduced a new item which is still in its beta phase called Daz Studio. It is a standalone product, but also can integrate with Poser, and at this time you can get it free. It to me seems much easier to use than Poser, and also in my opinion has a much easier access panel. I am certain in time this will be a total package for the people such as myself who prefer a program with a bit less of a steep learning curve. Oh by the way, did I mention it was free? :-)
But there are many items they also sell as well. For their own creations there are tons of add-on items such as clothing, props, and scenery. Their add-on items cover a spectrum of themes including everything from Medieval to Star Wars. They also each month give away a free item, and have a membership club called Platinum which you can join and get a lot of cool stuff for just $1.99.
Another outstanding product they have is called Mimic. If you have ever wondered how they make 3D characters talk, and have expressions, then this is the program that can do it. I in all honesty have to say that Mimic is a bit pricey, but if you get it, it will be the last program for 3D lip sync applications you will ever need.
A little history about Daz Productions: DAZ Productions originated as the Poser-production division of Zygote Media Group, Inc., in Provo, Utah. I am sure any of you who have ever used Poser is well aware of the name Zygote. It was co-founded by two guys named Dan Farr, and Christopher Creek. Be aware also these two guys aren't lightweights, not only are they the founders of Daz, but also both have extensive backgrounds in the 3D modeling, and PC gaming industry. I have to admit, it would sure be fun having their jobs. Let's face it where else could you get to play around with a 3D model beauty like Victoria, or her counterpart Stephanie all day long and not get smacked. :-)
In closing let me just say if you are new to the world of 3D modeling, or have considered giving it a try, then Daz Productions is an excellent place to get you moving in the right direction. Their products are affordable, their site offers many tutorials, and even forums for you to get tips and how-to experience. Of course you will in time need Poser as well, but this is by far the best place I can think of to get your feet wet before you take the plunge........The Editor..........
